4 Tips for Conducting Online Depositions

There are a few things that can be done before and during an online deposition to make the deposition run as smoothly as possible. This way, the deposition is easy for everyone involved and nothing falls through the cracks. Here are 4 tips to consider before conducting your next remote deposition.

#1: Test your technology

Before any deposition, it is important to prepare. For an online deposition, you have to throw technology into the mix. There are a few things you should test beforehand, including your video quality, audio quality, and internet connection. Even a 1-minute video call with a colleague will help you identify potential problems and allow you to make any necessary adjustments.

#2: Eliminate noise and distractions

From a ringing phone to someone walking into the room, there are countless ways the deposition can be disrupted. Make sure to silence all your notifications, meet in a quiet room, and let anyone nearby know there is a deposition taking place. It is worth saying the same to all attendees at the beginning of the call before the deposition begins.

#3: Invite witness to ask questions

After you give the witness being deposed instructions, answer any questions they may have. Getting those questions out of the way first is the best way to keep things moving. Keep questions to a minimum, however, once the recording has started.

#4: Speak clearly

Make sure you and the witness being deposed speak as clearly as possible and at a normal volume. This ensures everything is easily understood, the recording is easy to interpret later, and if using a court reporter/transcriber, this ensures they create an accurate transcript.
